AHRC; BBSRC; EPSRC; ESRC; MRC; NERC; STFC; British Academy; and Royal Society

Other UK Government Departments

Government departments; and other organisations financed from central government funds (but excluding Research Councils and UK public corporations):

· UK central government bodies

· UK local authorities

· UK health and hospital authorities

· Non-departmental public bodies (e.g., British Council)

UK Charitable Bodies

All charitable foundations, charitable trusts, etc. based in the UK which are registered with the Charities Commission eg:

· Wellcome Trust

· Leverhulme Trust

· British Heart Foundation

· Cancer Research etc.

UK Industry, Commerce and Public Corporations

· UK industrial and commercial companies; and

· UK public corporations (defined as publicly owned trading bodies, usually statutory corporations, with a substantial degree of financial independence) operating in the UK.

European Commission

· The European Commission only

Other

Any other external funder not included within the scope of the other funder types above:

· All bodies operating within the EU outside of the UK (but excluding the European Commission); and

· All bodies operating outside of the EU

For HEFCE reporting purposes the British Academy and Royal Society are also deemed Research Councils as they receive a significant proportion of their income from the UK Government.
